IMDb's top movie of all time: The Shawshank Redemption

Voters on IMDb have rated The Shawshank Redemption as their top favourite movie of all time. With 523,680 votes, this movie out does the other 249 all time favourites in its list. I can definitely say, it is one of my favourites, but top, that I do not know.

A bit of synopsis

The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 drama film written and directed by Frank Darabont starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.

Adapted from the Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, the film portrays the story of Andy Dufresne, a banker who spends nearly two decades in Shawshank State Prison for the murder of his wife. During his time at the prison, he befriends a fellow inmate, Ellis “Red” Redding and finds himself protected by the guards after the warden begins using him in his money laundering operation.

Nicki Minaj’s “Your love”

Nicki Minaj, featuring her song "Your love"

Nicki Minaj and “Your love”

This song has been one of my favourite tracks for a while, not only because it’s by Nicki Minaj, but it also features the instrumentals and background hooks of “No More I Love You’s” by Annie Lennox. It reminds me of days when I was younger and it would play on the radio in my parents’ car, all the time! This song is very catchy too, with the addition of additional bass, drum-loops and hip-hop backbeats.

And…her love

Your Love” features Minaj delivering a rap/singing mash-up. The song is the closest version to a rap ballad. In this song, Minaj references her admiration for Bruce Willis in Die Hard and Adam and Eve in her lines and makes several connections to Superman in the pre-chorus “‘S’ on my chest, let me get my cape on.This video features her dreamy Superman decription, but I do not see Bruce Willis! Follow her on Twitter!

Reasons you should swim!

6 Oct

It’s a work out

Swimming does burn calories at a rate of about 3 calories a mile per pound of bodyweight. If you weigh 150 lbs. and it takes you 30 minutes to swim one mile (1,760 yards or 1,609 meters), then you will be using about 900 calories in one hour. However, many swimmers do not swim that quickly, and many cannot swim for that distance or duration.

A rejuvenating experience.

For your body

Regular swimming builds endurance, muscle strength and cardio-vascular fitness. It can serve as a cross-training element to your regular workouts. Before a land workout, you can use the pool for a warm-up session. Swimming with increasing effort to gradually increase your heart rate and stimulate your muscle activity is easily accomplished in the water. After a land workout, swimming a few laps can help you cool-down, move blood through your muscles to help them recover, and help you relax as you glide through the water.

Psychological benefits

There are other psychological benefits to swimming, if you allow it to occur. Relax and swim with a very low effort. Let your mind wander, focusing on nothing but the rhythm of your stroke. This form of meditation can help you gain a feeling of well-being, leaving your water session refreshed and ready to go on with the rest of your day. Many swimmers find an in-direct benefit from swimming. They develop life skills such as sportsmanship, time-management, self-discipline, goal-setting, and an increased sense of self-worth through their participation in the sport. Swimmers seem to do better in school, in general terms, than non-swimmers as a group.
